Google Places allows entrepreneurs to create a listing for their business containing their company's address, a brief description of the markets in which it operates, their company's website, and more.

Search engines have been improving for numerous years now to provide results that take into consideration location attributes such as city, area, and even where the searcher is located. This practice is known as “local search” and goes hand in hand with how Small business get found by location.

1) SETTING UP A GOOGLE ACCOUNT

1) Type in www.google.com into your browser

2) Go to the top right hand side of the screen and click on sign in

3) You will be taken to a new page asking you to either sign in with your Google account details or to create a new account.

If you have an existing account (such as Gmail, or have installed Google maps on your site) you don’t need to create a new Google Account.
If you have never heard about Google accounts, you probably don’t have any so simply create one.

4) You will be asked to fill in the required information for a Google account. Do so and click on “I accept. Create my account”.
5) After completing this Google will send you an email for verification purposes. In the email you will be asked to click on the supplied link to activate your account.

6) To sign in to your Google account, go back www.google.com and sign in instead of registering for a new account.

2) LOCAL BUSINESS PLACES
Log in at: https://www.google.com/local/add/

Now enter your business information here and watch your listing take shape. In later steps, you will advertise specify categories, payment options, business hours, service areas, and much more.

Then  go through a quick verification process to get access to the following kinds of data:

  • Impressions: The number of times the business listing appeared as a result on a Google.com search or Google Maps search in a given period.
  • Actions: The number of times people interacted with the listing; for example, the number of times they clicked through to the business' website or requested driving directions to the business.
  • Top search queries: Which queries led customers to the business listing; for example, are they finding the listing for a cafe by searching for "tea" or "coffee"?
  • Zip codes where driving directions come from: Which zip codes customers are coming from when they request directions to your location.
